Lawn Aeration

Your lawn will compact as it ages or as it experiences heavy usage from children playing sports, people walking across it, and in some cases, sees occasional vehicle traffic. Over time your lawn will deteriorate and the soil will not do its job of filtering and retaining moisture.

Installing a lawn sprinker system won't change the condition of your soil, it will just create a poorer condition leading to thatching and fungi problems. Poor drainage will create further problems. If the roots of your grass only reach down 1 to 2 inches, your lawn could be badly compacted. To see if it is, you need to use a shovel to turn over some of your sod and check the depth of the roots.

If this is your lawn, then it needs aeration. Lawn aeration is a key part of good lawn maintenance. Aeration refers to the process of reversing the negative effects of lawn turf compaction. It works by allowing nutrients and oxygen to reach the roots of the grass. It is normally done once per year.

Lawn aeration is the process of using a machine to remove small soil plugs out of the lawn.  The core aerator has hollow tines or spoons mounted on a disk or drum which extract 1/2" to 3/4"diameter cores of turf and deposits them on your lawn.

If you have an irrigation system, you need to identify the spots where your sprinkler heads are. If you have clay soil or rocks in your soil, this may make aeration difficult.
